2,000 GREYHOUNDS WILL SOON NEED A PLACE TO CALL HOME

With greyhound racing coming to an end in Aotearoa, greyhounds are heading en masse from the racecourse to retirement. So they need a lot more places to call home.

Luckily, they’re great for many of the places us Kiwi live: apartments, small spaces, urban places. Big on sleep and small on exercise, they live low-maintenance. These gentle and well-mannered hounds are ready to fit in with your whānau.

Do greyhounds need tons of exercise?
No! They’re fast, but they’re usually just fast asleep. A couple of short walks and plenty of chill time is all they need to be happy.

Are greyhounds good with cats and small pets?
Some are, some not so much! We do an initial assessment, and from there it’s about knowing your dog and using common sense. We will help guide you with this.

Are greyhounds good inside the house?
Definitely! They love being indoors, but they may need a little time to learn the basics like stairs, shiny floors and general "what’s what."

What’s the deal with greyhounds and coats?
Greyhounds have thin skin and low body fat, so if you’re cold, they’re cold! They look awesome in warm coats and often wear cool, special martingale collars. Honestly, they end up with the best wardrobe of any breed!

When you adopt a Greyhound you receive much more than just a dog.

Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) is a registered charity rehoming greyhounds that are no longer suitable for racing. With over 3000 completed adoptions being a testament to the success of our processes. Affectionate, gentle and intelligent, greyhounds make great pets for most households including those who live in smaller homes.

All of our team are committed to matching you to the hound that is perfect for your family circumstances, whether it is the person you meet for the first time at an event or the rehoming team lead handing over your new dog.

Our greyhounds are carefully assessed and matched to their new owners - we act a bit like a dating agency. Our greyhounds also visit a vet for a health check, neutering and microchipping and we ensure that their vaccinations and council registrations are up to date.
