Auckland GAP Run

One of the cool things about owning a greyhound is being able to tell people they are the second fastest land animal. The downside is that if you take them for a run with other dogs, it ends up being like playing touch against Richie McCaw. Even at a trot, our dog gets annoyed that those old Labradors just won't go faster. And that doesn't help make friends.

GAP runs are a chance to stretch out with your mates!

For us, the idea of the off-leash greyhound run was a great way to let Katie get all of her running and bouncing out of her system with other dogs who can keep pace. We went off expecting half a dozen other greyhounds. We arrived to a paddock of greyhounds - at least 40 dogs and their owners. As soon as we took the lead off, Katie was away, introducing herself to other dogs, perhaps meeting up with old friends (do they remember each other from the racing days, I wonder). There were several sprints around the field, a few dunks in the water bucket and then some strolling around under the trees begging pats from other owners.

For us, as new owners, it was great to meet other greyhound owners and their dogs, share stories and pick up tips about how to keep our hound healthy and happy. A great day was had by all, particularly Katie and we will definitely be looking for more opportunities for her to catch up with the gang.
