Update on Frank

Frank came into GAP as a non-chaser just after his first birthday and found his new home less than two weeks later. He now lives in Auckland with the Grice family. Nancy writes:

Frank has been part of our family for nearly two years now.  I still clearly remember the day he was collected from the Manukau stadium.  It was certainly love at first sight on my part!

It was initially my husband Adam that suggested we look into adopting a Greyhound.  He had read an article about what great pets they make. That and also the size of the greyhound was a factor as neither of us were interested in getting a small dog. I have to say I wasn't convinced at first, as I had very little knowledge of Greyhounds, however after a look on the GAP website I was hooked on those wonderful soulful eyes and graceful physique.

We decided that we wanted a big dog (in fact I may have said 'small horse' on the adoption form), and as we needed a 'cat trainable' dog, we knew that we might be in for a wait.   Luckily we weren't waiting too long before the phone call came through to say a suitable dog was available.

Frank was just over a year old when we got him and as such he had never raced.  He was originally named Eric - poor thing didn't even get a race name.  After talking to his trainer, I found out that Frank was more interested in playing and having his tummy rubbed than chasing a lure!  In other words he was hopeless for the race track but perfect for pet life. Lucky for us!

Frank very quickly settled into home life with myself, Adam, Ella, Matilda and Eddy the cat.  Although he was scared stiff of the cat for weeks, he took to pet life like a duck to water - literally - he fell in the pond five minutes after arriving home!!  Frank has made firm friends with both of our girls and Eddy the cat.

We often laugh that Frank has two speeds - stop and go!   He spends much of his day curled up on his bed, however when we let him off the lead at a dog park or beach he simply flies with excitement.  It is an awesome sight, and as a keen photographer, I have many photos of Frank in full flight.

Frank has not only become a huge part of our lives (we have all just come back from a holiday together) he has also become a bit of a celebrity in our neighbourhood.  He loves getting pats from interested people while out and about and we love being part of a large community of Greyhound owners, taking part in Greyhound walks and special events.

Frank is a fabulous big dog, with a great laid-back and sometimes goofy nature.
