Pet greyhounds around the country took part in the Great British Greyhound Walk on 22nd June.
The walk, now in its fifth year, is a British event which has gone global. There were ten countries taking part with walks being held around Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand
The event aims to raise the profile of retired greyhounds, showing the world what beautiful companions these dogs make once off the track.
Greyhounds As Pets (GAP), which has rehomed more than 1200 greyhounds since its launch in 2006, encouraged its owners to join in the fun. Walks were organised from Dunedin to Auckland with some groups taking the British theme to heart and organising fancy dress and cream teas.
GAP Programme Director, Jacqui Eyley, was delighted with the response. "Our supporters love an opportunity to show people what wonderful pets greyhounds make.€
"Greyhounds are gentle, intelligent and affectionate, and make ideal companions. They are also very lazy and will no doubt head back home for a long snooze after the walk.€
GAP runs a comprehensive adoption programme helping the greyhounds transition from a racing dog to a pet including full health checks, temperament testing and fostering.
